Westerly Winds and Waves will be back by Wednesday!!!

The abnormal weather pattern that has been around since the beginning of the year and brought mostly poor surfing conditions and cold weather is starting to break up at last. a large complex low is building out in the atlantic and is forecast to push the high pressure over the british isles south east into Europe and start a period of mixed south westerly weather with a steady groundswell soon developing. this will fade a bit at the weekend when a ridge comes through but will be back again next week.
SOUTH WEST AND WALES (and south western Ireland)

Small waves for the next few days but south westerly winds should start later on Tuesday. Wednesday morning should see steady medium to large wind waves and swells developing through the day. These will be messy to start with but will steady down after a few days and this weekend should see some nice swells coming into all areas as the wind drops and the swells are revealed. More stormy weather is likely to come in next week but everything should be much warmer and springlike. Remember though the water is very cold and will stay that way for several months so you will need your full winter gear.

EAST COAST (Thurso area, use this and Far NW )

Mostly small to flat once any northerlies have faded early this week

FAR NORTH WEST OF SCOTLAND AND IRELAND

Westerly wind waves will start to return by Wednesday and they will develop into swells during the remainder of the week getting well into the medium range. quietening down a bit at the weekend but storms are expected next week.

CHANNEL COAST (east of Start Point)

Generally very small to flat. until later in the week when south westerly wind waves will develop and Friday should see some swells well up the channel. fading at the weekend but oit could be quite stormy next week

Activities and Comments

Got to Woolacombe to watch the ripples and have a nice walk on Saturday. the waves were just about rideable on the push of the tide. Off to Newquay next weekend where I expect to see some much better waves as we walk the coast path.

The measurement of waves and surf quality is a vexed question and there is a lot of false Macho attitude "the bigger the better" around. This in my experience is not true for most people. There are also those who suggest that unless the surf is peeling perfectly and glassy smooth it is no good. Good medium sized surf in my book is usually in the range of 2-3ft with moderate winds either on, cross or offshore and cleanish faces. In other words the sort of stuff that comes around quite frequently and not just classic days. Small surf is in the 1-2ft region but should be rideable by most (if you can't ride this sort of surf your board is too small!) large surf is in the 4-6ft range and gets scary. If I think that the surf is going to be particularly good I will indicate it clearly for those who only go to the coast for special days.

You are welcome to ask a question or add a comment below. I will try to answer it by the time I post my next report and I will leave the answer up for a few days.
